Connecting via the Manufacturer's App

Written by Marine Bourdain

For most brands, connecting to Voltaback is done directly from your manufacturer's official app, in just a few minutes, with nothing to do on the car's dashboard screen.

Brands covered: BMW, Renault, Tesla, Volkswagen, and more.

How it works

Voltaback connects to your vehicle through your manufacturer's official API. For this to work, your vehicle needs to be linked to an active account in your brand's app (MyBMW, MyRenault, Tesla app, etc.). This link lets Voltaback identify your home charging sessions and calculate your reimbursement at the right price.

Before you start — check these requirements

  • Have an active account in your brand's app. Download your manufacturer's official app and create an account if you don't already have one. This account is essential to authorize the connection with Voltaback.

  • Your vehicle must be linked to your account. In the manufacturer's app, check that your vehicle appears in your vehicle list. If it isn't added yet, follow the brand-specific steps to add it (usually via the chassis number or license plate).

  • Connected services must be turned on. In the app settings, make sure connected services and data sharing are turned on for your vehicle. Without this, Voltaback can't access your charging data.

  • Your manufacturer's connectivity subscription must be active. Some manufacturers offer connectivity as an option or for a limited time (often 3 years included at purchase). Check in your app that your subscription is still valid.

Starting the connection from your Voltaback account

  • From your Voltaback dashboard, go to Vehicle Connection and select your brand from the list of available manufacturers.

  • Log in with your manufacturer credentials. You'll be redirected to your brand's official login page (MyBMW, MyRenault, Tesla app, etc.). Enter your usual credentials — the same ones you use in your manufacturer's app.

Voltaback never stores your manufacturer login details. The connection is secured through the standard OAuth2 protocol.

  • Authorize data sharing and finish up. A confirmation screen shows which data will be shared with Voltaback: charge status, make, model, and year of the vehicle. Click "Authorize access" to complete the connection.

  • Check the connection status. Go back to your Voltaback account. Your vehicle should show as Connected ✓. Your first charging sessions will appear after your next drive.
